The five key domains of pediatric feeding problems.

Pediatric Feeding: The Big Picture Module 6 – Behavioral

There is a great need for therapists competent in evaluating and treating pediatric feeding disorders. Yet few have received adequate training in this area in school. Many therapists wonder, “What happens if I get this wrong? Can I do damage as a feeding therapist? And who is supposed to treat this, anyway?”

Pediatric Feeding: The Big Picture Module 6 - Behavioral

Pediatric Feeding: The Big Picture Module 6 – Behavioral

We continue our introduction to pediatric feeding disorders with an examination of the Behavioral component of a child’s eating skills. Is ABA ever appropriate in Feeding Therapy? Do children actually start eating using a Responsive Approach? We will discuss how some therapists utilize the principles of operant and classical conditioning, while others prefer to abide by the Division of Responsibility and respect the child’s right to say, “No”. We will also explore what can happen when any of these principles are misapplied.

Finally, we will apply the key principles and components learned throughout the series by discussing some pertinent case studies and practicing treatment plan formulation.
