Weaning a child from tube feedings to oral feeds can feel overwhelming for health professionals! The underlying motivator for children to learn to eat orally is internal desire or appetite. Explore the science of appetite in young children and learn how to wean children from tube feedings using a team approach, even in early intervention or private practice settings. This course focuses on the research, practical and creative strategies to improve oral intake in the home plus the importance of appetite regulation to help children transition to oral feeds.
 

Key Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe ten strategies to help drive hunger and support oral intake in children.
  • Discuss four different types of appetite stimulants and the role in tube weaning.
  • List four prerequisites for tube weaning in the pediatric population.
  • Discuss at least four medical conditions and four medications that influence appetite in children.
  • Describe the steps to successful tube weaning.

About the Presenters:

Melanie Potock, MA, CCC-SLP

Melanie Potock, MA, CCC-SLP is a feeding specialist and international speaker who presents a variety of live ASHA and AOTA approved courses listed on her website www.MelaniePotock.com or www.MyMunchBug.com. Melanie treats children with feeding challenges from birth to age seventeen years while balancing her career as an author and media expert on parenting and feeding children.

Holly Knotowicz, MS, CCC-SLP

Holly Knotowicz, MS, CCC-SLP, holds a Master of Science degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Nazareth College. She is a Speech Language Pathologist specializing in pediatric feeding with over 10 years of experience.
Her areas of clinical interest include behavioral, oral motor and oral sensory feeding disorders, including mealtime dynamics. She specializes with working with children who have eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases, including eosinophilic esophagitis and working with children who have food allergies, FPIES and neurogenic disorders.  She is an active participant in research, has been published in Gastroenterology Journal and is an international speaker on feeding.
