The purpose of this 1.5-hour presentation is to explore the history and use of different options for thickening agents in dysphagia across the lifespan. The presentation will include discussion of the pros and cons of various thickeners and their possible ramifications on respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. Information from recent discussions with the FDA regarding use of Simply Thick and rice cereal will also be presented. Participants will be taught alternatives to thickening agents such as various feeding positions and use of different nipples, cups, and feeding utensils and when these should be considered.
As a result of this course participants will be able to:
- Explain possible complications of using thickening agents.
- Discuss the pros and cons of various thickeners available.
- List the benefits of positioning techniques as an alternative to thickening.
- Identify when use of a slow-flow nipple or feeding device might be beneficial to a patient with dysphagia.
